About Interlake Mecalux
Who makes Interlake rack today, where it is built, and why the name has two parts.
Interlake Mecalux, Inc. is the North American company of the Mecalux Group. Mecalux began in 1966 when José Luis Carrillo opened a small workshop in Barcelona, Spain, making light-duty shelving. The range grew into pallet racking, rack-supported buildings, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) and the Easy WMS warehouse management software. Mecalux describes itself as the third-largest company in its sector worldwide.
The Interlake half of the name comes from the American rack maker whose assets Mecalux acquired from UFC Interlake Holding Co. in the US and Mexico. That is why buyers still search for “Interlake racking,” “Interlake material handling” and “Mecalux USA” — they are the same supplier.

Plants and offices in the US
Mecalux runs 12 manufacturing plants. In the United States they are in Chicago and Pontiac, Illinois; the others are in Tijuana and Matamoros (Mexico), São Paulo (Brazil), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Barcelona, Gijón and Palencia (Spain) and Gliwice (Poland).
The US headquarters is at 1600 North 25th Ave, Melrose Park, IL. Interlake Mecalux also lists US offices in Atlanta, Dallas, Pontiac, San Diego and Sumter, South Carolina. Interlake Mecalux calls itself the largest manufacturer of storage racks in the Americas, selling direct, through catalog partners and through certified material handling distributors such as Material Handling USA.
Buying Interlake Mecalux Through Material Handling USA
A distributor’s job is to turn a catalog into a rack system that fits your building, your trucks and your inventory.
- Layout and design. We draw rack elevations and aisle plans around your columns, doors, sprinklers and lift trucks. See our warehouse design services.
- Capacity checks. Beam and frame selections are matched to your pallet weights, unit-load sizes and beam levels using Interlake Mecalux capacity data.
- Permits and seismic. Utah, Idaho and Nevada jurisdictions often need stamped drawings and anchoring details; we coordinate them. Read our pallet rack guide for the basics.
- Freight and installation. One quote covers product, freight and certified installation crews.
- Full-building projects. Racking, shelving, mezzanines, conveyors and automation can be planned together through full warehouse design solutions.
Interlake Mecalux Selective Pallet Racking
The most common rack in North American warehouses: every pallet is reachable from the aisle.
Selective pallet racking gives direct access to every pallet position, so it suits warehouses with many SKUs and only a few pallets of each. Interlake Mecalux builds it with bolted or welded upright frames and a piston-lock beam connector that resists accidental beam disengagement and tampering.
Steel is high-strength and welding is done by American Welding Society-certified welders or robots. Finishes are baked enamel or powder coat, and upright posts can get a cataphoresis (e-coat) treatment for extra corrosion resistance. Beam levels adjust, so a row can be re-slotted as your products change.

Selective rack configurations
| Configuration | How it works | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Single-deep | One pallet per position, aisle on each face | Many SKUs, few pallets each |
| Double-deep | Two pallets deep; needs telescopic-fork reach trucks | Several pallets per SKU, fewer aisles |
| Narrow aisle (VNA) | Tighter aisles worked by turret or swing-reach trucks; can later be automated with stacker cranes | Tall buildings, high land cost |
| Pick shelves / flow levels | Shelving or carton flow on the lower levels, reserve pallets above | Case and each picking under bulk storage |
| Rack-supported building | The rack is the building structure carrying roof and walls | New high-bay or freezer buildings |

Drive-In and Drive-Through Racking
The simplest high-density pallet system for large quantities of a few SKUs.

In drive-in and drive-through racking the lift truck drives into the rack and sets pallets on continuous rails, several pallets deep and several high. Drive-in has one entry face and works last in, first out (LIFO). Drive-through has entries on both faces, so you load from one side and pick from the other for first in, first out (FIFO) rotation.
Interlake Mecalux calls drive-in the simplest and lowest-investment high-density system. Its racks include rail guides and pallet centering parts that help operators place loads, and lane depth and height are built to your truck and pallet sizes.
Drive-in for cold storage
Because drive-in removes most aisles, it packs more pallets into each cubic foot you have to refrigerate — a common reason controlled-temperature and freezer warehouses choose it. Plan for slower, careful truck travel inside the lanes, guide rails at floor level, and post protection at lane entries.
For frozen food, beverage, dairy and other homogeneous products stored in volume, compare drive-in with push-back and pallet flow in the table below, and see our drive-in rack guide.

Push-Back Pallet Racking
High density with a different SKU in each lane and trucks that never enter the rack.
Push-back racking stores pallets on nesting, free-rolling carts on slightly inclined rails. Loading a new pallet pushes the previous one back; when the front pallet is removed, gravity brings the next one forward. Interlake Mecalux push-back carts hold up to five pallets deep per lane, and each lane can hold a different SKU.
It works LIFO, keeps lift trucks in the aisle (faster and fewer rack hits than drive-in), and the carts are rated for -22°F to 104°F, so push-back is common in freezers. Locking devices, stops and pallet guides control each lane.

Push-back or drive-in?
Choose push-back when you have several pallets of many different SKUs and want faster cycles. Choose drive-in when you store large quantities of a few SKUs and want the lowest cost per pallet position.
Pallet Flow and Carton Flow Racks
Gravity-fed FIFO systems that separate loading from picking.
Pallet flow racks
Pallets load at the high end of a slightly inclined lane and roll at a controlled speed on heavy-duty wheels to the pick face. That gives strict first in, first out rotation, ideal for perishable goods and high-consumption items. Replenishment and picking happen in different aisles, so trucks and pickers don’t interfere.
Carton flow racks
Inclined wheel or roller beds carry cases and totes to the picker. Interlake Mecalux says carton flow can save up to 75% of labor costs versus static storage, and its clipless tracks speed assembly and re-slotting. It suits pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, consumer goods and parts. Carton flow can also be built into the lower levels of selective rack.
| Pallet flow | Carton flow | |
|---|---|---|
| Load unit | Full pallets | Cases, totes, split cases |
| Rotation | FIFO | FIFO |
| Typical use | Food, beverage, cold chain, staging | Order picking, e-commerce, healthcare supplies |
| Key parts | Wheel or roller lanes, speed controllers, pallet separators | Wheel/roller tracks, dividers, pick-face stops |
Cantilever Racking
Open-front storage for pipe, profiles, lumber, sheet and other long or bulky loads.
Interlake Mecalux cantilever racking is built from structural steel for medium- to heavy-duty loads. Bases and load arms bolt to columns, leaving the front open with no uprights in the way, so long goods load and unload straight from the side.
Arms and levels adjust to the product, extra bays can be added later, and vertical bracing keeps the row stable. Cantilever can also ride on mobile bases for higher density. Full sizing help is on our cantilever rack page.

Single- or double-sided
Single-sided cantilever goes against walls; double-sided sits in the middle of the floor with arms on both faces. Long stock should lie across the arms, running along the row, with enough arms under each load to keep it from sagging.
Common loads: steel and aluminum profiles, plastic and metal pipe, tube bundles, lumber, panels and moldings. Arm stops and decking options help with round stock and boxed items.
Interlake Mecalux Shelving and Mezzanines
Hand-loaded storage for small parts, cartons and items that don’t need a forklift.

Wide span shelving is Interlake Mecalux’s hand-stack system for medium to heavy loads. It works on the person-to-product principle: pickers walk to the shelf, so it suits many SKUs in small quantities. Levels reconfigure easily and decks can be wire, particleboard or steel.
Metal point rivet shelving covers lighter parts rooms. When floor space runs out, shelving can be built into a multi-level system or set on a mezzanine. Compare options on our steel shelving page or download the Interlake Mecalux brochures.
Movirack, Pallet Shuttles and Automated Systems
When labor, land or cold-room cost justifies moving the rack or automating the trip.
Movirack mobile racking sets racks on guided bases that slide sideways, so a whole block needs just one working aisle at a time. It is especially popular in refrigerated and deep-freeze storage.
Mecalux also builds pallet shuttle and 3D automated pallet shuttle systems, stacker cranes for pallets and boxes (miniload), box and pallet conveyors, pick stations, autonomous mobile robots and Easy WMS warehouse software, which appears in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for warehouse management systems.

Thinking about used rack?
Used savings are typically used up by installation — parts rarely fit well after disassembly, and installer time to straighten and fit them costs more than new. Reusing rack you already own can work, but new is sometimes still cheaper after fix-up time. Call our sales team with pictures and we’ll help you decide.
