Signage Is What Makes a Queue Work

Belts and posts decide where people can walk. Signage decides whether they know where to go, what to have ready and who to talk to when they get there. A queue with good hardware and no messaging still produces the same three questions at the counter all day — and the staff member answering them is the one who was supposed to be serving the line.
Visiontron builds the messaging layer for its own crowd control systems in Bayport, New York, and Material Handling USA supplies and installs it: post-top sign frames that clamp to the stanchions you already own, freestanding sign posts and towers for open floor, weatherproof stands for outside the door, engraved stock signs for the messages that never change, and in-house printing for the ones that carry your brand.
Because the frames, adapters and inserts are all built around the same handful of standard sizes, you can start with three signs at the entrance and add to the same system later without re-buying hardware. Below are the product families, the sizes and finishes, the mounting options for the posts you already have, and the decisions worth making before you order.
Post-Top Sign Frames, Brackets & Signs
These attach to a stanchion you already have in the queue. Choose by how the message gets changed, how rough the environment is, and how the frame should look next to your customers.
Premium Designer Series Sign FramesThe FRDS-Series frame in heavy-gauge aluminum with cast zinc corners. Radius corners remove the sharp edge risk next to a queue, and the hinged top — captive, so it cannot be lost — lets staff change a sign with no tools. Eleven standard sizes from 7″ × 11″ to 27″ × 40″, in smooth black, polished aluminum or polished brass aluminum. Holds insert material up to 1/4″ thick; an optional locking top stops tampering.
Heavy Duty Sign FramesThe traditional square-corner FRHD-Series in welded steel. A slotted top accepts up to 1/4″ of insert material. Five standard sizes from 7″ × 11″ to 22″ × 28″, three stock finishes (smooth black, polished chrome, polished brass aluminum) and nine specialty finishes including 200+ RAL powder-coat colors. The workhorse frame for high-traffic queues.
PRIME Heavy Duty Sign Frame KitsThe value-line kit: welded-corner steel frame plus one universal post adapter cone in the box, so it drops onto a PRIME stanchion without extra parts. Three sizes — 7″ × 11″, 8.5″ × 11″ and 11″ × 14″ — in smooth black or polished chrome. The right pick when you need dozens of frames on a budget.
Stanchion Sign BracketsThe SB-Series bracket grips an engraved ColorCore sign, clear acrylic holder or any 0.235″ thick panel permanently — no hinged top to open, so the message stays put. Smooth black or polished chrome, with three post-mounting options for RETRACTA-BELT®, Classic and sign posts.
Angled Sign ExtensionModel 645SBE raises a sign bracket 5″ above the post and tilts it back 45° so the message reads from above — exactly what you want for museum labels, art exhibits and car shows. Steel with welded corners, black or chrome, 2 lbs, no extra hardware needed.
Engraved ColorCore SignsStock 7″ × 11″ × 0.235″ signs with white engraved text on a black core in seven of the most-requested messages, single- or double-sided (“PLEASE ENTER HERE”, “EXIT”, “PLEASE WAIT HERE FOR NEXT AVAILABLE AGENT” and more). Interchangeable in Designer Series or Heavy Duty 7″ × 11″ frames, exterior-rated as supplied, and available with a custom message.| Frame family | Construction | Standard sizes | Finishes | Sign change method | Insert thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Designer Series (FRDS) | Heavy-gauge aluminum, cast zinc corners | 11 sizes, 7″×11″ – 27″×40″ | Smooth black, polished aluminum, polished brass aluminum | Hinged captive top, optional lock | Up to 1/4″ |
| Heavy Duty (FRHD) | Welded steel | 5 sizes, 7″×11″ – 22″×28″ | 3 stock + 9 specialty finishes, 200+ RAL | Slotted top | Up to 1/4″ |
| PRIME Heavy Duty kit | Welded steel | 7″×11″, 8.5″×11″, 11″×14″ | Smooth black, polished chrome | Slotted top, adapter cone included | Up to 1/4″ |
| Sign Bracket (SB) | Steel bracket | Holds 7″×11″ ColorCore or 0.235″ panel | Smooth black, polished chrome | Permanent grip (no hinge) | 0.235″ |
| Angled Sign Extension (645SBE) | Steel, welded corners | Raises bracket 5″, tilts 45° | Black or chrome | Permanent grip | 0.235″ |
Not sure which frame fits your posts?
Send us a photo of your stanchion post top and the message you need to display. We will confirm the frame, the adapter and the insert, and quote them as one line item so nothing arrives missing a part.
Mounting Options: Making Signs Fit the Posts You Own
The frame is rarely the problem — the post top is. Visiontron publishes four post-mounting styles plus a wall mount, which is why these frames can usually be added to an existing queue, including one built from another manufacturer’s stanchions.

Pick the mount by how often the sign changes. A screw-in attachment is the cleanest permanent install. A slide-in attachment is the right answer wherever signs are swapped daily — it is also required on the 3′ sign post (SP600S-3) and the 6′ sign posts (SP600S-6 and Model 360). The Universal Post Adapter is the safe default on a mixed fleet because it fits almost any 2.5″ diameter post on the market.
If your queue uses grooved 9′ RETRACTA-BELT® posts (280 Series) — or Lavi® Beltrac® hardware you are not replacing — the U-bracket grooved post adapter is the correct part. Where floor space is the constraint, the wall-mount frame carries posters and larger media without putting anything in the walkway.
| Mounting style | Fits | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Universal Post Adapter | Nearly any 2.5″ diameter post on the market, including 300/302/330/332/390 Series, PRIME Series and Value Series 101/206/301 | Mixed or inherited stanchion fleets, and competitor posts you are not replacing |
| Screw-in sign attachment | RETRACTA-BELT® posts tapped for signage, urn and flat-top Classic posts, Classic 2″ sign posts (SP600D) | Permanent installations where the sign rarely moves |
| Slide-in post attachment | 3′ sign posts (SP600S-3) and 6′ sign posts (SP600S-6, Model 360) — required on those models | Signs that change frequently, such as shared airline gates |
| U-bracket grooved post adapter | 9′ grooved RETRACTA-BELT® stanchions (280 Series) and Lavi® Beltrac® products | Grooved-post queues and mixed-brand retrofits |
| Wall mount | Wall surface instead of a post | Posters and larger media where floor space is tight |
Retrofitting a mixed queue
Most sites we quote have posts from two or three eras and at least one other brand. That is workable: order Universal Post Adapters for the odd posts, screw-in attachments for the Visiontron posts that are tapped for signage, and keep every frame the same size so inserts stay interchangeable across the whole floor.
Inserts, Engraved Signs & Printed Graphics
The frame is the hardware; the insert is the message. Getting this pairing right is what keeps signs legible instead of glare-washed and curling.
| Insert type | Material | Sizes | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-glare Plexiglas insert | 1/16″ non-glare Plexiglas | 7″×11″ (711P), 8.5″×11″ (811P), 11″×14″ (1114P), 14″×22″ (1422P), 22″×28″ (2228P) | One sheet protects a printed sign; two sheets sandwich a paper sign you print yourself |
| Black Sintra backer | 1/8″ Sintra | Matches the frame size | Stiffens and backs a paper sign so it does not curl or show through |
| Engraved ColorCore sign | 0.235″ engraved ColorCore | 7″×11″ | Permanent stock or custom message, exterior-rated, used in frames or brackets |
| Custom printed insert | Digitally printed rigid stock | Any standard frame size | Branded, multilingual or promotional messaging produced with the frame |

Paper signs need two sheets, not one
A common ordering mistake: one sheet of acrylic protects a rigid printed sign, but a paper sign needs two pieces of 1/16″ non-glare Plexiglas — or one piece of acrylic plus a 1/8″ black Sintra backer — so it stays flat and does not show the frame through the page. Non-glare inserts cannot be used with engraved ColorCore signs, because the ColorCore panel is the sign.
For messages that will never change, engraved ColorCore is the durable choice: white engraved text on a black 0.235″ core, exterior-rated, and available in seven stock messages or a custom message. Put it in a sign bracket instead of a frame and there is no hinge or slot for anyone to tamper with.
Freestanding Sign Posts, Stands & Towers
When the message needs to stand on its own — at a door, a checkpoint, a promotion or the far end of a concourse — it comes off the stanchion and onto its own base.
3′ Tall Sign PostsA freestanding post at reading height for entrances, checkpoints and standalone wayfinding, using the same sign frames as the rest of the queue. Slide-in post attachment is recommended when the sign changes often, and RETRACTA-BELT® versions tie signage and belt line together on one post.
6′ Tall Sign PostsPuts the message head and shoulders above a crowd — the standard answer for airport concourses, stadium gates and any hall where a floor-level sign disappears behind people. The 6′ tall RETRACTA-BELT® version adds a 10′ premium belt for queue control on the same post. Slide-in post attachment is required on the 6′ models (SP600S-6, 360).
VERSA-STAND Sign PostsA freestanding post-mounted display with a large curved viewing area and panels that change in seconds through concealed hand slots. Use it for wayfinding and promotional messaging where a small post-top frame is not enough but a full tower is too much.
VERSA-STAND Heavy Duty Sign StandsFully weatherproof, 22″ × 28″ display, single- or double-sided, with panels that change in seconds through a tamper-resistant concealed space beneath the sign. Adjustable non-marking rubber floor protectors level it on uneven ground; an optional base weight adds 10 lbs. Black, silver or gold; ships knocked down or fully assembled.
VERSA-STAND Sign TowersThe maximum-visibility option: 22″ wide in a 72″ or 92″ height, curved PETG panels that resist cracking, a 30 lb steel base for stability and Tilt & Roll wheels that engage only when the tower is tipped. Single- or double-sided, custom sizes, powder-coat finishes, extended base and a lighting feature are all available.
Freestanding Bulletin HoldersDouble-sided floor-standing holders for notices, schedules, policies and public information — the quiet workhorse in lobbies, clinics, campus buildings and government offices where the message is read, not glanced at.| Product | Display size | Environment | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| VERSA-STAND Sign Post | Post-mounted curved panel | Indoor | Wayfinding and queue messaging at reading height |
| VERSA-STAND Heavy Duty Sign Stand | 22″ × 28″ | Weatherproof, outdoor rated | Airport wayfinding, casino promotions, stadium signage, sidewalk menus |
| VERSA-STAND Sign Tower | 22″ × 72″ or 22″ × 92″ | Indoor (custom finishes available) | High-impact messaging that must be seen over a crowd |
| VERSA-STAND Flat Panel Sign Tower | 12″ or 22″ wide × 72″ tall, built to order | Indoor | A clean flat display surface instead of a curved insert |

How to choose a height
Read the room, literally. If people can see the sign from where they make the decision, a 3′ post or a VERSA-STAND sign post is enough and costs the least. If the decision point is 60 feet away, or the floor is full of people, you need elevation: a 6′ sign post, or a 72″/92″ VERSA-STAND tower. The 92″ tower exists specifically to stand head and shoulders above a crowd.
Then check stability and transport. The VERSA-STAND tower carries a 30 lb steel base with an optional extended base adding another 30 lbs, and its Tilt & Roll wheels only engage when the unit is tipped, so it rolls to the storeroom and then stays where it is set. Outdoors, use the weatherproof Heavy Duty Sign Stand with the extra base weight rather than an indoor tower.
Planning signage into a new queue layout?
Signage placement is a layout decision, not an accessory decision. Our team lays the queue out with you — entry, decision points, elevation and sightlines — then quotes the posts, belts, frames and towers together.

Branding: Custom Printing, Belts, Banners & Mats
Guidance products occupy the most-looked-at square footage in the building. Visiontron prints in house — full-color digital, silk screen and dye sublimation, with its own art department — so signage, belts, ropes, panels and mats can carry one consistent identity.
Custom Printed Signs, Belts & PanelsVisiontron prints in house using full-color digital printing, silk screen and dye sublimation, with its own art department. Logos and messaging can be carried onto sign inserts, retractable belts, ropes and Q-PANEL® panels so the queue looks designed instead of assembled from spare parts.
Custom Sign InsertsAny standard frame size can be produced as a printed insert instead of a paper sign behind acrylic: directional arrows, policy notices, promotions, multilingual messaging or a branded panel. Order the graphic and the frame together and it arrives assembled.
RETRACTA-BANNERA 48″ W × 33″ H changeable graphic that retracts into a 6″ diameter tube and weighs 8 lbs. The universal clip attaches to RETRACTA-BELT® and other major stanchion brands, it locks at any height, swivels up to 45° and graphics change in minutes by unzipping tamper-resistant connecting strips.
Paddle SignsModel PS12-2 in Durabond: 12″ wide, 17.75″ long, 0.125″ thick, 0.75 lbs, double-sided and laminated with a 6″ × 2.125″ contour-cut handle and a hanging hole. Cheap, tough and instantly readable for events, concerts, stadium gates and airport greeters.
Custom Logo Floor Mats24-ounce nylon 6.6 yarn with a skid-proof nitrile rubber backing, dyed by an injection process that holds fine detail. Fourteen standard sizes from 2′ × 3′ to 5′ × 20′ in vertical or horizontal layouts, plus custom sizes; artwork colors are specified from the stock color chart.
Airport Flight Information BoardsVisiontron began with airline information boards more than 60 years ago. Manual arrival/departure boards use release buttons so one insert can be pulled without disturbing the column beside it; electronic gate boards use 2″ 18-character LED displays, stand-alone or daisy-chained on a network, storing up to 35 pre-programmed messages that scroll, flash or hold.- Supply vector artwork and specify colors from the stock chart at time of order
- Buy printed graphics together with their frames or panels so they arrive assembled
- Keep one frame size across the site so inserts stay interchangeable
- Use engraved ColorCore for permanent messages and printed inserts for seasonal ones
- Plan a spare set of inserts — changing a message should not need a new purchase order
Where This Signage Earns Its Keep

Airports and transit. Shared gates change airline several times a day, which is exactly why slide-in attachments and interchangeable inserts exist. Add 6′ posts for concourse visibility, weatherproof stands curbside, and flight information or gate boards at the podium.
Stadiums, arenas and events. Paddle signs and towers move with the crowd flow, and branded belts turn the queue itself into sponsor inventory. Everything has to store flat and survive being handled by seasonal staff — hence PETG panels and welded steel frames rather than plastic.
Casinos and hotels. Polished brass or chrome Designer Series frames match a lobby that a black utility frame would cheapen, and logo mats carry the brand at the entrance.
Healthcare, banks and government. Fixed, unambiguous instructions in engraved ColorCore, bulletin holders for notices and policies, and clear check-in wayfinding — combined with ADA-compliant queue layout so the path and the signage both work for every visitor.
Retail and venues. Towers for promotions, printed inserts for pricing and rules, and paddle signs at the door on the busiest days of the year.

Specifying Queue Signage: What We Ask You
Map the decision points
Walk the path a visitor takes and mark every place they have to choose — entrance, form pickup, ID check, counter, exit. Each one is a sign; everything else is clutter.
Fix the sightlines
Stand at each decision point and look. If a seated or standing crowd hides the sign, the fix is height — a 6′ post or a 92″ tower — not larger text.
Choose frame and change method
Daily changes mean slide-in attachments and hinged tops. Permanent messages mean engraved ColorCore in a bracket. Mixed posts mean Universal Post Adapters.
Lock in sizes and finishes
Standardize on one or two frame sizes so inserts interchange, and match finishes to the room: black for utility spaces, chrome or brass for lobbies.
Add the branded layer
Decide what carries artwork — inserts, belts, panels, banners, mats — and send vector files with the order.
Quote, ship and install
We quote frames, adapters, inserts and stands as one package, coordinate delivery, and can install and set the queue on site.
Two details that cause reorders
First, paper signs need two acrylic sheets (or one plus a Sintra backer) — ordering one leaves the sign curling in the frame. Second, the 3′ and 6′ sign posts require the slide-in post attachment, so a screw-in frame ordered for those posts will not mount. We check both before releasing an order.
