What Is Lyon Shelving?

Lyon shelving is steel shelving made by Lyon, a storage manufacturer that has built steel products since 1901, when B.L. Waters founded the Lyon Metallic Manufacturing Company. Lyon is based in Montgomery, Illinois, and makes its 2000 and 8000 Series shelving in the USA.

The core of the line is clip shelving: steel uprights with box-formed shelves held by shelf clips, adjustable on 1-1/2 in. centers. Around that core Lyon builds bin shelving with dividers, shelving with modular drawers, rivet rack and bulk storage rack for bigger hand-loaded items.

MH-USA quotes, ships and installs Lyon shelving for stockrooms, parts rooms and warehouses, and sells many units and parts in our online Lyon store. For other brands and types, start at our shelving solutions hub.

Lyon 2000 Series vs 8000 Series Shelving

Both series are steel clip shelving with 1-1/2 in. shelf adjustment, starter and add-on units, open or closed styles and 22, 20 or 18 gauge shelves. The difference is the upright, and that changes how the shelving looks, how it splices and which parts fit.

Lyon 8000 Series (T-post)

The 8000 Series uses Lyon's patented T-post uprights, roll-formed from 16-gauge steel, at the front and rear corners. Shelves come in three duties: 22-gauge medium-duty, 20-gauge heavy-duty and 18-gauge extra heavy-duty. Lyon rates a basic 8000 Series section at up to 8,000 lb based on 18 in. maximum shelf spacing and no seismic loading.

Common stock depths are 12, 18 and 24 in., widths 36, 42 and 48 in., and most units use 84 in. posts (96 in. is also stocked). The 8000 Series is also the base for Lyon bin shelving and drawer shelving.

Lyon 2000 Series (angle and beaded posts)

The 2000 Series uses 14-gauge roll-formed posts. Angle posts are the economical choice and work at front and rear corners. Beaded posts go on the front corners, with angle posts at the rear, to give maximum shelf clearance along a long run.

Pre-engineered 2000 Series sections ship unassembled with 20-gauge shelves. Stock depths are 12, 18 and 24 in., and Lyon's stock catalog lists 73, 85, 97 and 121 in. heights. Starters include four posts (two upright assemblies); add-ons include one upright assembly and share a post with the unit beside them.

Not sure which you already own? Look at the upright: a T-shaped post is 8000 Series, an L-shaped angle or a narrow beaded front post is 2000 Series. Clips and shelves are sold per series in our store, so check before you add on. More on steel clip shelving in general is on our steel shelving page.

Lyon Shelf Sizes and Load Capacities

Lyon publishes shelf ratings per shelf size and gauge, based on evenly distributed loads. The table below is from Lyon's 8000 Series sell sheet and 2024 stock catalog (2000 Series 20-gauge shelves carry the same ratings at these sizes). Point loads or dropped loads can fail a shelf below its rated load.

Shelf size (W x D)22-ga medium-duty20-ga heavy-duty18-ga extra heavy-duty
36" x 12"500 lb800 lb1,100 lb
36" x 18"500 lb850 lb1,200 lb
36" x 24"550 lb800 lb1,250 lb
48" x 12"Not offered500 lb750 lb
48" x 18"Not offered550 lb900 lb

Two things buyers miss: wider shelves hold less, and Lyon does not generally recommend 22-gauge shelves for industrial jobs larger than 36 x 24 in. If a run must carry heavy parts on 48 in. shelves, step up to 18-gauge or shorten the span. The post also has a limit: total section load drops as shelf spacing grows, so tall bays with few shelves need a check. Send us your item weights and we confirm the right gauge.

Lyon Rivet Rack and Bulk Storage Rack

When items are bigger than a clip shelf, Lyon offers two boltless rack styles for hand loading.

Lyon rivet rack

Rivet rack uses 14-gauge uprights (angle posts or T-posts) and double-rivet beams that drop into keyhole slots and adjust on 1-1/2 in. centers, with boltless center supports for deep levels. Lyon's pre-configured starters run 48 to 96 in. wide and 24 to 48 in. deep at 84 in. high, rated 1,000 lb per level at 48 in. wide and 800 lb per level at 60 and 72 in. Decking options include particle board, wire and steel.

See also our rivet shelving and boltless shelving pages.

Lyon bulk storage rack

Lyon positions bulk storage rack between light-duty shelving and pallet rack. It has all-welded 14-gauge uprights and Z-design beams with a 5/8 in. step that holds the deck; each beam end has three studs and a fold-in lock tab. Lyon rates its 14-gauge heavy-duty beam pairs from 3,300 lb at 48 in. wide down to 1,650 lb at 96 in.

Decks: particle board (5/8 in., 750 lb per section), ribbed 20-gauge steel, solid steel, galvanized flat wire for airflow and sprinkler access, or Duradeck. Compare styles on our bulk storage rack page.

Lyon Shelving Parts and Accessories

Most Lyon searches we see are for parts: clips, posts and extra shelves to extend or repair existing shelving. Match the series first, then the depth and height.

Uprights, shelves and bracing

8000 Series T-posts are sold in pairs by height, for example the 120 in. T-post upright 2-pack. 2000 Series shelves come in 5-packs such as the 48 x 12 in. heavy-duty box shelf. Sway braces or solid sides and backs keep open units square; Lyon uses 12-gauge braces on its 2000 Series units.

Floor and wall anchoring: Lyon recommends securing shelving to the wall or floor. Foot plates and anchors are listed in the Lyon category.

Shelf clips, dividers and bin parts

Clips are series-specific. Order shelf clips for 2000 Series (they fit angle and beaded posts) or the 8000 Series clip 20-pack. Lyon specifies four clips per shelf.

To turn shelves into bins, add shelf dividers, bin fronts and label holders. 8000 Series shelves are punched on 3 in. centers for dividers. Our shelf clips and dividers guide and shelving replacement parts page cover sizing.

History and Evolution of Lyon Shelving

Lyon traces its start to 1901, when B.L. Waters founded the Lyon Metallic Manufacturing Company on the belief that steel products would take a leading place in the market. More than a century later, Lyon makes lockers, cabinets, shelving and rack from steel and operates from Montgomery, Illinois.

For shelving buyers, that history shows up in two long-running clip shelving series. The 8000 Series is built on Lyon’s patented T-post upright; the 2000 Series uses angle and beaded posts. Both use box-formed shelves in 22, 20 or 18 gauge, so you can choose the duty to match the load. Lyon added bin shelving, shelving with modular drawers, rivet rack and bulk storage rack around that core, which lets one brand cover a parts room, a stockroom and a bulk storage area with parts that match.

Because the series have stayed consistent, many facilities extend Lyon shelving installed years ago. Check the upright style first, then order matching add-ons, shelves and clips.

How to Choose the Right Lyon Shelving

Choosing the right Lyon Shelving system is essential for optimizing your storage space effectively. Here’s a structured guide to help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and space constraints.

Assess Your Space and Storage Needs

  • Measure Your Space: Determine the height, width, and depth of the area where you intend to place the shelving. Consider any potential obstructions like doors or windows.
  • Identify Storage Requirements: Reflect on the weight and dimensions of the items you need to store. Lyon offers a variety of shelving strengths suitable for everything from light office supplies to heavy industrial items.

Choose the Appropriate Material and Design

Pick the series and gauge: Lyon shelving is steel. Choose the 8000 Series (T-post) or 2000 Series (angle or beaded posts), then a 22, 20 or 18 gauge shelf based on item weight and shelf width. Use rivet rack or bulk storage rack for items that do not fit on a clip shelf.

Consider adjustability: Shelves on both series adjust on 1-1/2 in. centers with shelf clips, so openings can change as your stock changes.

Focus on Functionality and Accessibility

  • Ease of Access: Decide how frequently you’ll need to access stored items. Open shelving units are ideal for regular access, while closed cabinets may be better for long-term storage of seldom-used items.
  • Mobility Features: If you anticipate needing to move your storage around, consider shelving units with casters.

Plan for Future Scalability and Aesthetic Integration

  • Scalability: Ensure the shelving you choose can grow with your needs. Modular systems can be expanded or altered as your requirements evolve.
  • Aesthetic Considerations: Select a style and color that complement your existing décor. The right shelving should enhance the room’s overall aesthetics.

By following these steps, you can select a Lyon Shelving system that not only meets your immediate needs but also adapts to future changes and enhances the functionality and appearance of your space. Whether you’re outfitting a home, office, or industrial setting, Lyon Shelving provides versatile and durable options to keep your environment organized and accessible.

Installation Tips for Lyon Shelving

Efficient and safe installation of Lyon Shelving can greatly improve its usability and durability. Here’s a streamlined guide to setting up your Lyon Shelving units, including essential tools and safety tips.

Lyon 8000 Series T-post with an anchoring footplate bolted to the floor

Safety is crucial:

  • Wear protective gear to avoid injuries.
  • Secure the shelving to a wall if it’s tall or will carry heavy items to prevent tipping.
  • Always lift heavy materials using your legs, not your back.
  • Check the shelving’s stability by shaking it gently; adjust if it wobbles.

Finally, once secured, start loading items from the bottom up, placing heavier items on lower shelves to stabilize the structure. Regularly check and tighten any loosened screws or bolts as the shelves settle.

Following these steps ensures your Lyon Shelving is installed effectively, providing reliable storage for years.

Maintenance and Care for Lyon Shelving

To ensure your shelving remains functional and visually appealing for years, follow these essential maintenance steps:

Regular Cleaning:

  • Dust shelves regularly with a soft cloth or duster.
  • For deeper cleans, use a mild soap solution and a non-abrasive cloth.
  • Dry shelves thoroughly to prevent moisture damage.

Rust Prevention and Treatment:

  • Maintain good ventilation to prevent rust in humid environments.
  • Treat any rust spots early with a rust remover appropriate for the material.
  • Apply a protective coating after treating rust to prevent recurrence.

Inspect for Wear and Tear:

  • Regularly check joints and connections for loosening.
  • Tighten any loose screws or bolts to maintain stability, especially on heavily loaded shelves.

Adhere to Load Capacity:

  • Avoid overloading shelves beyond the manufacturer’s recommended weight limits.
  • Evenly distribute weight across the shelves, placing heavier items on lower shelves.

Reevaluate Item Placement:

  • Periodically organize stored items to ensure accessibility and prevent overloading.
  • Rearrange items if you notice shelves bowing or bending to reduce stress on the structure.

Protect from Environmental Damage:

  • Shield shelving from direct sunlight to prevent fading and material weakening.
  • Use curtains or blinds if shelving is near windows.
  • For outdoor or semi-outdoor setups, ensure shelving is treated or covered to withstand weather conditions.
